Map-based Mobile Services: Theories, Methods and Implementations

The book is divided into three parts: theory, method and implementation. Starting with a summary of the state-of-the-art in mobile technologies, the first part analyses their impacts on cartography and pinpoints the missing theories concerned with the development of map-based mobile services. A conceptual framework of mobile cartography is then introduced with the emphasis on mobile usage context. The second part is devoted to the design methodology under the constraints defined in the theoretical framework. A core issue deals with personalised mobile map services. The final part demonstrates the feasibility of the methods by using application scenarios. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the PDF-Files in colour...

Geographical Information Systems: An Introduction

This book is written for the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) novice. It introduces beginners to the vocabulary, concepts, principles, and procedures of GIS, explaining these all in simple, easy-to-understand terms. With exercises, example applications, over 80 illustrations, and a glossary of GIS-related terms, this text is ideal for both students and professionals using spatial data...

Innovations In GIS

This book aims to offer research at the cutting edge. The individual chapters are fully revised and updated versions of contributions to the first focused scientific symposium on research in geographic information systems GISRUK. The book provides the reader with a comprehensive outline of the full range and diversity of innovative research programmes in the science of GIS. Chapters address key issues such as computational support; spatial analysis and error; and application and implementation...

What Would a New Paradigm for GIS Look Like?

Computer technology, in terms of processor power, Operating Systems (OS), size, monitors, peripherals, and software, may become the main controlling factor in the future of GIS as desktop software. What Would the New Paradigm for Geographic Information Systems Look Like? addresses the impact of technological developments on the evolution of GIS, and particularly as an operational tool in the workplace. It shows how to make GIS as usable as every other desktop package and how to make it easy to use and understandable for a wide range of applications. It also explores data and the representation of 'reality' as an important element of GIS through the future developments in data models and databases...

Geographic Objects With Indeterminate Boundaries : GISDATA 2 (GISDATA Series)

Current geographical information systems GIS deal almost exclusively with well-defined, static geographical objects ranging from physical landscapes to towns and transport systems. Such objects, exactly located in space, can easily be handled by modern GIS, yet form only a small proportion of all the possible geographical objects.; This book challenges the assumption that the world is compsed of exactly defined and bounded geographic objects such as land parcels, rivers and countries. ignoring the essential complexity of the world, current GIS do not adequately address problems as diverse as the resolution of crime between national boundaries, or the interpretation of views of people from different cultures. This work, bringing together a range of specialists from fields such as linguistics, computer science, land surveying, cartography and soil science, examines current research into the challenges of dealing with geographical phenomena that cannot easily be forced into one of the two..
